ARTIST STATEMENT

In retrospect, I can see that my intentional exploration of extremely different geographic and cultural contexts has sharpened my visual perception.

In each case, I seek to discover the subtext of the spiritual residing just behind reality, whether that "reality" is the city, the tundra, or the island; whether it is the multicultural urban community, the isolated Arctic village or the indigenous Pacific experience.

My paintings are portals of transcendence. Through them, I invite the viewer to join me in searching for an epiphany. I attempt to capture the moment when a person passes from what is real for them through what is real for another into a place which is beyond them both. This place of light shadow, color, and form is the domain of epiphany where vision translates reality into the infinite.
